Motivation dictates our work ethic, inspires our drive, and allows us to accomplish our goals. As such, existing influences from extrinsic and intrinsic factors influence our behaviors, attitudes, and ultimately what motivates us.Intrinsic motivation describes inspiration that comes from within. You are internally motivated by activities and skill development solely for the satisfaction of personal accomplishment and enjoyment (Thompson, 2017). Intrinsic motivation stems from core values and beliefs which develops overtime. Examples of how an individual would motivate someone who is intrinsically motivated is by imparting vision and inspiration. For example, in nurse leaders, they focus on relationships that builds communication and trust. They lead by example and act as role models to establish drive and direction. In doing so, they instill vision that both innovates and inspires others to follow their lead (Huber, 2014). By effectively communicating one’s vision, they can motivate others to adopt changes which also empowers them to develop innovative ways of implementing the vision.

On the other end of the spectrum, extrinsic motivation describes a stimulus of motivation that exists outside yourself. This type of motivation exists around us which can come in the form of personal gains, punishment, or rewards (Thompson, 2017). Examples of how an individual would motivate someone who is extrinsically motivated is by implementing a punishment and rewards scenario. For example, in the business workplace, when managers want to reach organizational goals, they motivate others by rewards and punishment. These rewards can come in the form of bonuses or promotions. Punishments can also be used that come in the form of demotion or termination. Both these actions create an incentivized scenario that will motivate others to boost their productivity in reaching established goals.

A performance-driven team is a group of goal-focused individuals who specialize in skills to collaborate, innovate, and produce consistent exceptional results (SHRM, 2015). As such, these teams display essential characteristics pertinent to their success and function. General characteristics of a performance-driven team are a combination of purpose & goals, talent, skills, performance ethics, incentives & motivation, efficacy, leadership, conflict, communication, power, and empowerment (SHRM, 2015). These characteristics ensure cohesiveness within team individuals in reaching objectives and established goals.
