You are a radio news writer for the following stories. You are to rewrite these stories into broadcast style. You will turn in five different sheets of paper (each page will have a different news story on it). You must write short, sweet, and to the point, leaving out unnecessary information but keeping in pertinent details. Your lead sentences must be written in present, present-perfect, or future tense and must include the 5 Ws (Who, What, When, Where, and Why). Three points will automatically be counted against you if your lead sentences are written in tenses other than present, present-perfect, or future tense. Your second and following sentences may be written in past tense if you wish. Your stories may not exceed five sentences each. One point will be counted off for each misspelled word, grammatical mistake, or for not writing in proper broadcast style. Refer to the Writing for Broadcasting Tips in the Modules section of Canvas for assistance. EACH LINE OF YOUR TYPED STORIES MUST BE DOUBLE SPACED, ALL WORDS MUST BE IN CAPITAL LETTERS, AND THE CITY (not the state) MUST BE INCLUDED IN YOUR LEAD SENTENCES. ALSO, YOUR ASSIGNMENT MUST BE STAPLED.
REMEMBER: You are writing for broadcast, not print. You do not have a dateline but you must mention the name of the city in the lead sentence. Local is not the name of a city.

STORY #1 YOU ARE WRITING FOR A EVANSTON, IL RADIO STATION
GERALD TIPTON, 66, OF EVANSTON, WAS SENTENCED TO 11 YEARS IN PRISON THIS MORNING AFTER BEING CONVICTED OF DRUG SMUGGLING. CIRCUIT COURT JUDGE LAWRENCE BAKER ALSO TOLD TIPTON HE MUST PAY $350,000 IN FINES ONCE HE IS RELEASED FROM PRISON. TIPTON WAS CONVICTED OF SMUGGLING 750 POUNDS OF COCAINE ACROSS THE ILLINOIS STATE LINE. TIPTON IS THE MAYOR OF EVANSTON.
STORY #2 YOU ARE WRITING FOR A REXBURG, ID RADIO STATION
A REXBURG WOMAN WAS ARRESTED AT HER HOME YESTERDAY AND CHARGED WITH SHOOTING HER 10-YEAR-OLD STEPDAUGHTER TO DEATH. REXBURG POLICE CAPT. CARMEN DAVIS SAYS KAYLA KINGMAN, 41, OF 654 MORNING GLORY DRIVE IS BEING HELD AT THE REXBURG COUNTY JAIL IN LIEU OF POSTING A $250,000 BOND. KINGMAN WILL APPEAR IN COURT TOMORROW TO ANSWER THE CHARGE. SHE IS THE SUPERINTENDENT OF REXBURG COUNTY SCHOOLS. HER STEPDAUGHTER WAS 10-YEAR-OLD EMILY FORREST.
STORY #3 YOU ARE WRITING FOR A CARLTON, IOWA RADIO STATION
2 COLORADO JAIL INMATES WERE FOUND DEAD IN A CARLTON HOTEL TODAY, APPARENT VICTIMS OF SUICIDE. CARLTON POLICE WERE CALLED TO THE SCENE OF THE MONTEREY JACK HOTEL BY THE HOTEL MANAGER. DETECTIVES FOUND THE BODIES OF JANE GRIFFIN, 31, AND DOUGLAS BENNING, 27, OF DENVER, CO ON THE FLOOR OF ONE OF THE HOTEL ROOMS. POLICE BELIEVE THE COUPLE KILLED THEMSELVES BUT WILL CONTINUE TO INVESTIGATE THE CASE. POLICE HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR THESE TWO PEOPLE AFTER THEY ESCAPED FROM THE DENVER CITY JAIL 2 MONTHS AGO.
STORY #4 YOU ARE WRITING FOR A WATSON, MD RADIO STATION
KENNETH PARKS, 44, OF WATSON, FINALLY RECEIVED HIS HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA LAST NIGHT. PARKS HAD DROPPED OUT OF SCHOOL AT THE AGE OF 18 TO TAKE CARE OF THE FAMILY FARM. YEARS LATER, HE RETURNED TO WATSON CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL TO TAKE NIGHT CLASSES. PARKS, WHOSE NEPHEW MICHAEL ROWAN ALSO GRADUATED FROM CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL LAST NIGHT, IS CURRENTLY THE MAYOR OF WATSON.
STORY #5 YOU ARE WRITING FOR AN OWENSBORO, KY RADIO STATION
RESIDENTS OF ONE OF THE DORMS AT OWENSBORO TECH WERE ORDERED TO MOVE OUT OF THEIR ROOMS TODAY WHEN SEVERAL SNAKES WERE FOUND IN ONE OF THE BATHROOMS. COLLEGE SPOKESPERSON NATALIE STATER SAYS ONE OF THE RESIDENTS SAW 4 COPPERHEAD SNAKES IN THE BATHROOM STALLS IN ROBERTS HALL. WHEN RESIDENTS OLIVER CAMPBELL AND DANIEL BROWN NOTIFED THEIR DORM DIRECTOR, A FEW OTHER RESIDENTS SAW SOME OTHER SNAKES IN THE HALLWAY. STATER SAYS THE RESIDENTS WILL HAVE TO FIND OTHER HOUSING FOR THE NEXT WEEK WHILE SCHOOL OFFICIALS CLEAR UP THE PROBLEM.
