Word length: 2000-3000 words (not including footnotes/bibliography)

You are to conduct an analysis of the film Roger and Me. In your analysis you will discuss what you believe are the critical themes and concepts that are illustrated in the film and that relate to issues and concepts from this class. You will have a lot of flexibility on this and I will address that in the notecast below. All of the materials you will need will be provided for you (directions on how to cite the given sources are below). This is not a “research” project this is an analysis of a film using the concepts and ideas from criminology and the social sciences, generally speaking.

There are two broad categories, ‘Thinkers’ and ‘Theories’, to choose from. Please review your specific instructions to determine how best to include these categories into your analysis in some manner. You are super strongly encouraged to watch the screencast below it will save you a LOT of time.

Papers are expected to meet the APA requirements of format and style. Students must cite the sources of all ideas, facts, and information used that are not their own, even if they have put the information into their own words. Failure to do so is plagiarism, even if the oversight is unintentional.

ROGER AND ME

Introduction

This project will provide you an opportunity to synthesize critical ideas of the social sciences and analyze them in the context of crime and deviancy. During the 80s and 90s no single town illustrated the rapid and fluctuations of social, political, and economic change as Flint Michigan. It was emblematic of cross-roads of two different eras- one higlighted by large monolothic industrial-based corporations and ‘big governmnet’ New Deal-like programs being the center of social-life… to an era of globalized and integrated economies with an increasing focus, domestically, on services over large manufacturing.

During this time a film, ‘Roger and Me’, was created that documented this change on a community, Flint, Michigan. While organized like a documentary it is not- but nonetheless it is a brilliant artifact in its’ presentation. Without even trying the film depicts in every scene all aspects of different ideas, concepts, and theories associated with the social sciences. Quite literally, you will have in any single individual scene ideas from all areas of the social sciences- some of these interpretations may conflict with each other but they are, nonetheless, exhibited.

Big Three

The concept of “social science” – poltiical science, economics, criminology, anthropology etc- has only been in existence for about 200 years or so. In all of the social sciences the three individuals who have had the most profound and lasting impact through the years have been Karl Marx, Èmile Dukheim, and Max Weber. Their ideas, concepts, theories, and (especially in the context of Marx) philosophies on human behavior and the social order are subsummed, in some way, into all the sciences; indeed, for the ciminologist and the crimnological theories the ideas of Marx, Weber, Durkheim [MWD] are, in many respects, the intellectual tools by which the basic tenents of our theories are derived from. Thus, if you understand their ideas then your understanding of the social world- including but not limited to criminology- is greatly enhanced.

‘Thinkers’

Marx

Weber

Durkheim

‘Theories’

Classical School (theories, concepts, studies of)

Neo-Classical School (theories, concepts, studies of)

Example: Routine Activities

Positivist/Criminality School (theories, concepts, studies of)

Example: Social Disorganization

Now, remember, within each school is a range of different theories, ideas, and concepts. For example, in Psychology we looked at various studies conducted by Millgram, etc. You are not required to integrate each and every concept. study, or theory into your analysis; rather, you have to decide which are most relevant to the themes you want to focus on.
