Week 7 Short Responses – Question 1
Name three historical lenses that you could apply to gain a fuller picture of the relationship
between Natives and white settlers. Be sure to respond to this question in two to three
sentences, using proper grammar.

1. Social lens: I can apply the social lens to see how the push of Native Americans into the
Western United States had an effect on them as a society. I could research if the relocation of
the tribes broke some tribes apart or if they made them closer together.
2. Religious lens: I can apply the religious lens to see how Native Americans felt that the
white settlers were trying to push their religion onto them. If the Native Americans did accept
the religion, how did it change their tribes and what practices of the white settlers religion did
they incorporate into their lives.
3. Political lens: I can apply the political lens to research into why the white settlers felt that
they could relocate all of the Native Americans to begin with. Did pushing them out of the
southeastern United States fill the white settlers agenda as hoped? Did planning to make all
of the Indian tribes go against each other and inflict harm on one another fill the political
purpose of pushing the Indians away?
