As stated in the text, The DSM describes the disease processes of mental disorders and not people. Various life experiences, personalities, behaviors, or other issues in living can make the same diagnosis look very different from one client to the next. While the DSM can provide helpful diagnostic criteria, it does not address the “why” of the mental illness or the unique aspects that might impact that client.
