Multiple theoretical perspectives regarding translation practice

Multiple theoretical perspectives regarding translation practice

Dr. Davidson

The ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY assignment is intended to support your final translation project for this course. Toward that end, you are asked to identify at least 10 secondary sources (literary or scholarly works) related to your project that discuss: 1) multiple theoretical perspectives regarding translation practice, 2) linguistic issues specific to your source language, 3) historical or cultural contexts pertinent to the literary work you are translating, and/or 4) your author’s biography or literary practice. You are to provide both a complete bibliographic citation for each source and a full annotation (5-7 sentences in length) summarizing the article’s central points and your assessment of this work’s value for your own translation practice.

Strategies:

 First, consider our course readings as possible material for your bibliography. Your bibliography should not be composed exclusively of course readings, but do call upon those which you have found useful and which have informed your translation practice.

 Second, you should use the research databases housed on the UHD library website (e.g. Project Muse, JSTOR, Literature Resource Center, etc.) to find additional critical essays that offer insight into your source language and the writer’s work you are translating.

 Third, you should seek books, book chapters, or essays which provide information related to the following issues:

  1. 1) Literary translation theory that has informed your own translation practice;
  2. 2) Linguistic issues specific to your source language;
  3. 3) Historical or cultural context pertinent to the literary work you are translating;
  4. 4) Author’s biography and/or overview of the writer’s oeuvre (the overall trajectory and rangeof the writer’s project over time).

(Try to provide a balance among these categories of readings as they best inform your particular literary project and your own developing theoretical perspective on translation practice.)

 Fourth, you should provide appropriate documentation of both your primary source (the literary work you have selected to translate) and your secondary sources (critical essays, books/book chapters about that literary work and translation), in the form of a works cited page with an annotation for each bibliographic citation. Each annotation should: 1) summarize the key points of the source under review, and 2) discuss how you have used, or plan to use, this source in your translation process. Annotations should be approximately 5 to 7 sentences in length.Format:Your annotated bibliography should be developed as a Works Cited page with annotations. It should be typed, double-spaced, and use one-inch margins and standard 12 pt. font. You should use Modern Language Association (MLA) format in the presentation of the bibliography. A sample annotated bibliography is posted to Blackboard for your review.Due Dates:See our Course Schedule & Calendar on Blackboard.
