Professor’s Guidance for this week’s Learning Engagement

When transformational and transactional leadership is compared, it seems to me that the former is either directly or indirectly touted as the better of the two (e.g. Ingram, 2019). It may seem that way because the theories about transformational leadership were described and defined in the literature later than transactional leadership (Bass, 1990).

The truth is that depending on the situation, one or the other leadership style is the better. In fact, some leadership writers talk about switching leadership styles according to the need of the situation (Businessballs, n.d.). And some of the most famous of leaders have used transactional leadership to accomplish great things. For instance, here are some quotes from some famous and admired transactional leaders (STU Online, 2014):

Norman Schwarzkopf: “When placed in command, take charge.”

Vince Lombardi: “The price of success is hard work, dedication to the job at hand, and the determination that whether we win or lose, we have applied the best of ourselves to the task at hand.”

Bill Gates: “The first rule of any technology used in a business is that automation applied to an efficient operation will magnify the efficiency. The second is that automation applied to an inefficient operation will magnify the inefficiency.”

Howard Schultz: “Starbucks is not an advertiser; people think we are a great marketing company, but in fact we spend very little money on marketing and more money on training our people than advertising.”
