PAPER There will be one (1) paper, worth 10% of YOUR FINAL GRADE. The paper will have no less than five (5) complete pages. Do not include the cover or reference pages in your page count. The student will pick a police department that has a form of community policing developed and in practice.
The paper will consist of an evaluation of the police departments’ community policing program and how it correlates with what has been written about COPP, COPS, etc, and what has been discussed in class. The paper will be graded on the students’ ability to express their ideas in terms of content and the premise of the original topic. The student must include the title, author, and date of publication, from which an article or data is taken. Students will use APA or ASA citing styles. NO OTHER STYLES WILL BE ACCEPTED, THIS INCLUDES FOOTNOTES Every paper will have a cover and a reference page; neither is to be counted as part of the page count. The body of the paper will be paginated (numbered) and consist of a thesis statement, a well-constructed body, and a well-constructed conclusion that summarizes the major points and relates to the thesis statement. Margins, font, and spacing: The paper will have a 1″ margin on each side and at the top and bottom. The font to be used is either Times New Roman or Courier New, 12 pt, double-spaced, with no additional spacing between paragraphs. The professor will refuse to accept papers having the following defects: absent or poor citations, improper (margins, fonts, or spacing) and that the paper does not meet the length requirements. Plagiarism: is defined as the using of someone else’s words or ideas without giving proper credit to the author (Johnson et al., 2002). You must use your own words. When using information from someone that you have interviewed, you need to cite them. This is your paper and you have your own writing style and this style has its own rhythm. When you try to change only a few words to make the authors words your own, you are still plagiarizing and your rhythm changes. It also makes the papers disjointed and hard for the reader to follow. A suggestion to avoid plagiarism: highlight the information that you want to use, as you read the article. Then use a 3X5 card to record this information, in your own words (paraphrasing), and then put down the source. Before you begin to write your paper develop an outline. Separate your cards into the topics found in your outline and place them in order following the outline. This will aid you in writing the paper and make it easier to cite the author properly. Late policy: The paper is due no later than 1300 hours on November 27th Papers turned in after this time will be considered late. Late papers will not be accepted beyond the next class period. Do Not e-mail your paper (Only hard copies of your paper will be accepted). Papers are to be given to me, in person. T will not accept any papers slipped under my door nor will I accept them on e-mail.
