•The effect of oxygen on the retinal vessels is dependent on:
–The length of exposure to oxygen
–The concentration of oxygen (FiO2)
–The arterial oxygen tension PaO2 or saturation (SaO2)
•The vasoconstrictive effects of short periods of high oxygen are reversible. If it lasts longer than several hours, it may not be reversible.
•Treatment/Prevention:
–Maintain PaO2 levels in a “safe” range (50-70 torr) or saturation 85-98% based on gestational age
–Reduce the duration of exposure to high FiO2 levels
–Use PEEP/CPAP to decrease the FiO2 <60%
–Vitamin E
–Cryotherapy/laser surgery
