For Essay 2, we are shifting gears from a reflective personal narrative to an ethnographic narrative. While you will still be providing insight through reflection of your experience, the focus of this type of narrative is not introspective, but extrospective. This change means that you are turning your gaze and analysis skills outward to a community, for an ethnography is “an in depth profile used in many academic subjects, such as sociology, anthropology, and linguistics, to analyze the culture—behaviors, beliefs, and values—of a particular community (66). To create a successful ethnographic narrative you will need to conduct a thorough investigation of a selected community. Remember, part of conducting an investigation entails gathering sources of various types depending on the writer’s goals and the audience’s expectations.
