Exercise: Character and Setting

Answer the following questions as either file upload or text entry. Read "A&P" by John Updike

CHARACTER

  1.  Identify one round character in "A&P" and one flat character in "A&P."
  2. Identify a detail from "A&P" that use the following techniques in describing each of these characters:  (a) Queenie’s appearance, (b) Lengel’s speech, (c) Sammy’s actions, and (d) foils for Queenie and Sammy. You can write a short paraphrase of the detail or copy a quotation. (Use quotation marks!) 

SETTING

  1. Show how each type of setting is found in "The Masque of the Red Death": (a) natural, (b) manufactured, and (c) cultural. You can write a short paraphrase or copy a quotation. (Use quotation marks!) 
  2. Explain how the setting in "The Masque of the Red Death" is used for each of the following: (a) provide symbolism, and (b) contribute irony. A brief sentence for each is all that is needed.
