Overview

Once again, although a longer work of fiction, the argument can be made that great dramatic scenes can be found within the text of Kafka’s The Metamorphosis. Thinking about what we’ve read so far, pick the section that you think would make the best stand-alone scene for the stage, and then you’ll analyze that section just like we did the other plays we studied.

In this discussion you will appraise structural elements of drama in Kafka’s The Metamorphosis.

Please answer the following questions in your initial post:

Plot: What is the most important moment or event in the plot? Why is it the most important? How does it show the play’s theme? Is conflict key to your play?

Setting: What is the play’s setting? Consider multiple aspects of time, location, atmosphere, and so forth to discern the role that setting plays in the story’s events. How does it support the play’s theme?

Character: What happens to the main character? How and why? What role do the other characters play in the experience of the main character?

Staging: How do the staging choices help drive the plot and subsequent themes?

Dialogue: How do the characters speak? What does that speech help drive in the play?

Briefly describe how the plot, characters, setting, staging, and dialogue all contribute to the story’s theme. Then, answer this question: what is the meaning of the story? What do you think the author is trying to tell us?
