Emotional Intelligence (EQ) is the ability to identify and manage your own emotions and the emotions of others. It consists of four skills: Self-Awareness; Self-Management; Social Awareness and Relationship Management. Self-awareness is “one’s ability to accurately perceive your own emotion in the moment and understand your tendencies across situations”. Self-management is “one’s ability to use an awareness of emotions to stay flexible and direct his or her behavior positively”. Social Awareness is “one’s ability to accurately pick up on emotions in other people and understand what is really going on with them”. Relationship Management is “one’s ability to use awareness of one’s own emotions and those of others to manage interactions successfully”. EQ provides a foundation for many important professional and personal skills. Improving EQ can have a significant positive impact on one’s life (Bradberry, 2009).
