Students will write a 4-page position paper on social justice and group work, answering the following questions:
- Defining Social Justice and Group Work
- How do you define social justice?
- How do you define group work?
- What are the connections between social justice and group work?
- Exploring Privilege and Oppression
- What are areas of privilege that might shape your experience as a group leader?
- What are areas of oppression that might shape your experience as a group leader?
- How do you plan to monitor and address these issues?
- Applying Social Justice to Group Work
- How do you plan to integrate social justice into counseling groups that you might facilitate in the future? Provide at least 1 example of an opportunity to practice social justice and group work in your future work setting (e.g., school, college, community).
The paper should reference and cite each of the following: 1) Ten Strategies to Intentionally use Group Work to Transform Hate, Facilitate Courageous Conversations, and Enhance Community Building (Guth, et al, 2019); 2) ASGW Multicultural and Social Justice Counseling Competencies for Group Workers (Singh, et al., 2012); and 3) ACA/CSJ Advocacy Competencies. The paper should adhere to APA format throughout.
