Discussion Board, Chapter Group I: Chapters 1, 2, 3, and 4. Choose one chapter from this group for your post.Chapter Group 3, 4, and 5:
DIRECTIONS: First, read all of Chapter 4. Then, watch the video resource for Chapter 4, “Killing Us Softly.” Identify at least 5 terms/concepts from the book you see demonstrated in these clips. Explain your answer in detail and be sure to put pages numbers in bold and parentheses.
Sample term in proper format:
Master Status (Section 4.3) Textbook Definition: a status that cuts across other statuses occupied by a person. Master statuses can include gender, race, etc. Example from the videos: From the video Killing Us Softly, the focus of the video is the portrayal of women in advertising images. The ads include images of young girls, older women, various races, etc., but the expectations associated with being female cut across the statuses of race and age. One ad says, “I probably wouldn’t be married today if I hadn’t lost 49 pounds.” In this example, the weight expectations for females cut across the status of being married/being a spouse. Another example is the image of Britney Spears. She is a famous singer, but the expectation of appearance associated with her sex cuts across her status as a performer.
Use the same format for your terms.
Term 1 (location) – Textbook Definition: give definition and additional explanation when necessary. Example(s) from the videos: identify which video you are referencing and give specific examples from the video, along with an explanation of how this example fits the term/concept. Elaborate with specific behaviors or language you observed in the video.
Term 2 (location) – Textbook Definition: give definition and additional explanation when necessary. Example(s) from the videos: identify which video you are referencing and give specific examples from the video, along with an explanation of how this example fits the term/concept. Elaborate with specific behaviors or language you observed in the video.
Term 3 (location) – Textbook Definition: give definition and additional explanation when necessary. Example(s) from the videos: identify which video you are referencing and give specific examples from the video, along with an explanation of how this example fits the term/concept. Elaborate with specific behaviors or language you observed in the video.
Term 4 (location) – Textbook Definition: give definition and additional explanation when necessary. Example(s) from the videos: identify which video you are referencing and give specific examples from the video, along with an explanation of how this example fits the term/concept. Elaborate with specific behaviors or language you observed in the video.
Term 5 (location) – Textbook Definition: give definition and additional explanation when necessary. Example(s) from the videos: identify which video you are referencing and give specific examples from the video, along with an explanation of how this example fits the term/concept. Elaborate with specific behaviors or language you observed in the video.
NOTE – In the example listed above, my answer would be incorrect if I only wrote, “Example from the video – The video is all about advertising images of women. Women are female and sex is a master status.” In this weak example, the student lists a master status seen in the video, but does not explain how sex is shown to be a master status (a status that cuts across other statuses occupied by a person). Your goal is to not just list an example of your term, but to explain WHY it is an example. This requires providing a specific explanation that connects the definition to the example.
From the clip “Killing Us Softly”:
1. Using the example/format above, identify at least 5 terms/concepts from the book you see demonstrated in the video.
2. In the context of the video, what do you think is meant by the phrase “Killing Us Softly”?
