DIRECTIONS

This exam covers material from Weeks 5 and 6The exam has two (2) parts. Part 1 consists of five (5) short answer questions. Answers to short answer questions should be around 1-4 sentences. Part 2 consists of one (1) comparison essay. The comparison essay should be around 1-2 paragraphs. Artworks should be fully identified (artist, title and date). You are encouraged to use the PowerPoints as a resource. However, your answers must be written entirely in your own words—if you plagiarize, you will be required to redo the exam. Do not use quotes. Answers should be free from typos and spelling errors and should make use of appropriate art history terminology. 

PART 1: SHORT ANSWER QUESTIONS (60 points)

Answer ALL five (5) questions. Answers should be around 1-4 sentences.

Question 1: What techniques did the Late Gothic artist Giotto use to make the figures and space in his painting of the Lamentation from the Scrovegni Chapel (1305-1306) look illusionistic? (tip: make sure you know what “illusionistic” means before you attempt to answer this question)

Question 2: Baroque art in Catholic countries was meant to connect with and involve the viewer, both emotionally and bodily. Discuss the techniques used by artists such as Bernini and Caravaggio to achieve this. (12 points)

 

Question 3Which Impressionist painting from Week 6PowerPoint 2 do you think best embodies the characteristics of Impressionism? Why? (12 points)

 

Question 4Explain the relationship of David’s Oath of the Horatii (1785) to Enlightenment thought and Classical art. (12points)

 

Question 5How does Turner’s Romantic painting Snowstorm: Hannibal and His Army Crossing the Alps (1812) evoke the concept of the sublime? (12 points)

 

PART 2: COMPARISON ESSAY (40 points)

Your essay should be around 1-2 paragraphs. 

Write an essay comparing Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa (High Renaissance, 1503-06) and Pablo Picasso’s Girl with a Mandolin (Cubism, 1910)Discuss the similarities and differences of the two works of art. Make sure to consider the following: subject matter, style, medium, and formal elements as well as the historical context. Your essay should also address the main theme of the comparison. (30 points)
