1. Read Chapter 20: Shaping Earth’s Surface and the article: Chapter 20 – Creating Earthquakes.pdf

2. Answer the following question at least 250 words.

Fracking and related mining techniques have dramatically reduced the costs of fossil fuels in America, but, as described in the article, they have also led to a worrying increase in minor earthquakes. Do you feel that the economic benefits of fracking outweigh the risks? Does your answer change if the regulatory changes proposed in the article seem to be successful in curbing earthquake activity?

4. Please respond to one student below with 3-5 sentence if you agree, disagree or try to either challenge or expand on what it is that they are trying to say to their post and explain why.

I don’t feel that the economic benefits are beneficial for the future. Each day we are killing the Earth more and more. In the article, they described how Oklahoma has had 907 man-made earthquakes within a one year time frame. It is believed that the extraction of oil and gas is the cause of these earthquakes. Well the toxins that is released during this process and then returned into the Earth. I feel that this is a great representation of stupidity. We are poisoning our home just to fulfill our self gratification. I do not feel that these “supposedly” benefits are outweigh the underlying issue. It’s not bad enough that we are killing the ozone layer, but we are also murdering the earth internally. I don’t understand, how we can quickly create destruction but slow to making adjustments of restoration.

My response to this article will stay persistent. I don’t feel that these man-made earthquakes will not cease until we take affirmative action. First, there need to be research completed to find better alternatives than oil and gas. Also, moderate or eliminate the usage of these components. Curbing the earthquakes will mean that the extraction process will need to cease and completely refrain from poisoning our world. When we eject the toxic waste water back into the ground, we are contaminating nature If not, we will continue to damage/contaminate the Earth; it will not be able to recover form our actions. Possibly exterminating all living beings. In conclusion, we should eliminate the extraction process of oil and gas and not place toxic wastewater within the earth before more substantial outcomes acquire. That will hinder all life form and the Earth itself.
