Emerging Adulthood

Most everyone in this course is in the developmental period of emerging adulthood. As many of you have probably read in the textbook, this is a relatively new developmental period. Typically people in this developmental period do not perceive themselves as an adolescent or an adult. For this discussion post, you are to reflect on this developmental period, incorporating the following thoughts in your post:

  • Describe the characteristics that lead emerging adults to not quite consider themselves adolescents or adults. (5 points)
  • How does the theory of emerging adulthood apply to your own personal circumstances? That is, do you consider yourself an adult? Why or why not? If you do not consider yourself an adult yet, what do you believe that you must do to consider yourself an adult? If you consider yourself an adult, are there other things that you can do to make yourself seem more like an adult? (5 points)
  • In your opinion, do you believe that emerging adulthood is a unique developmental period? Why or why not? In your answer, link developmental tasks (e.g., getting married, graduating college) from the current generation to previous generations. (5 points)
  • What new policies or laws can be implemented in your home state, region, or country in order to help youth transition more easily into adult responsibilities? (5 points)
